Difference between Content Writing and Copy writing

While dealing with clients as a content writer you may want to be clear about content writing and copy-writing. Many people think that copy-writing and content writing are all the same but they are not. They are two very different skills although they do seem to overlap in some areas. Here are some main differences between a copywriter and a content writer:

  1. Purpose of writing – when a copywriter writes, it is usually to sell a product or a brand image to a target audience. The goal is to influence the target audience, to have a connection with them in addition to informing them of the products/the brand. It is not the same for content writers because most content writers have the job of just informing and educating people about a variety of topics, even entertainment but never persuasion. The goal of content writing is not to assuage someone to buy or do anything.
  2. Format – the kind of writing that a content writer in Delhi does is usually long-form since it is supposed to inform and educate people whereas copy-writing is short, to-the-point, and concise. This also affects the style of writing in both of these forms. Due to being short, copy-writing is slicker and doesn’t add unnecessary details whereas content writing may have flowery language.
  3. The job title – the jobs inherently differ from each other because a copywriter essentially writes marketing material for companies and a content writer is simply anyone who writes content. These two jobs are also different because now due to the democratization of technology and the internet, anyone can be a content writer.
  4. Types of writing – A copywriter mostly writes for ads, taglines, jingles, online campaign material, brochures, etc but content writers write newspaper articles, magazine articles, podcast scripts, blog posts, social media posts, etc
  5. Calculability of the effect – one can easily tell when a copywriter has done a good job for an ad because more people will be watching the ad, more people will be clicking on it, etc but with content writers, it isn’t the same. When content writers write it’s not meant for persuasion or to go viral per se. So, the effect on the audience is not calculable.
  6. The target audience – with copy-writing the audience is mostly potential customers. For example – if a copywriter is writing for a candy advertisement, the ad will be targeted towards children mostly and that affects how the ad will be written, etc. the case is not the same with content writing because anyone who wants to know/read is the target audience while writing content, it is not specifically directed towards any particular group of people.

These are most of the differences that are found between a content writer and a copywriter although the two overlap in some parts. Apart from these differences, there are a few others like knowledge in SEO, skillset, kind of writing, etc. Regardless, both the kind of writers are an integral part of the kind of writings one sees around and require expertise, experience, and a skill set that takes a lot of time to gather.
